Artist Statement
The paradox between the tangible and the intagible, the real and the abstract, imagination and truth lends life its necessary melodrama, and, as an artist drawn towards these idiosyncrasies of existence, my works are reflections of my emotional responses to the flow of life through the passages of time and circumstance, collectively addressed as experiences and identities. I engage myself in mapping these identities which I collect as I travel through life. My visual language may often be borrowed from the mundane as I attempt to map the journey within me onto the canvas to give form to my inner voice. My portrayals that intermingle humour and drama are often set to a dark mood.
I began my journey in art making with Printmaking which I specialized in at Kala Bhavana, Visva Bharati. Here, the tactile possibilities of a deep etched zinc plate and embossing became the tool that enabled me to unravel the myriad possibilities beyond a two dimensional visual surface.
Along with it, I explored techniques like relief printing, viscosity and using of multiple zinc plates for a multi-layered print which inspired me to experiment further with several mediums. While this offered the luxury of studying and appreciating the innate character of each medium, the process of integrating them helped negotiate a therapeutic realm between my works and myself.
However, for me, art making begins with my evaluation and study of the emotions generated within me in response to an observation; and reaches a high point when such thoughts gain consummate expression on my canvas and launch themselves as a conduit between my ideological premise and the viewer, to set forth dialogues that may or may not ignite transformations. I therefore regard my work as my voice. I believe that an artist's brush wields power to spark change through art and hence I would like to use my role as an artist and art educator, to convey powerful messages for posterity with the aim to enhance general emotional intelligence
